A standard spring-return actuator will immediately slam closed when air pressure is lost. While this is desirable for emergency shutoff, in modulating control loops (such as boiler feedwater or furnace temperature), slamming closed causes catastrophic process shocks. The 4M-SALV traps air inside the actuator, holding the valve at its last position so operators can maintain controlled production or perform an orderly shutdown.
The 4M-SALV is designed for single-acting actuators with one air chamber. For double-acting actuators with two opposing air chambers, 4MATIC produces the dual-acting model 4M-DALV which locks both ports simultaneously.
