Three-Phase Electric Motor Bearing Temperature, Vibration Analysis & Laser Alignment

Vibration mitigation, bearing fatigue extension, and dynamic torque transmission

Three-phase electric motors drive 70% of all mechanical power consumed across Kenyan industry. Excessive motor vibration, high bearing temperatures (> 80°C), and recurrent mechanical seal failures on driven pumps or gearboxes are almost always rooted in angular/radial shaft misalignment, uncorrected soft foot, or incorrect bearing radial clearance. Correct diagnostic practices protect production assets, prevent motor burnout, and cut factory electrical consumption.

Procedure Summary & Key Takeaways

Eliminating motor vibration and bearing overheating requires checking for soft foot, achieving precision shaft alignment with laser tools (< 0.05mm offset), using C3 clearance bearings to accommodate thermal expansion, and installing insulated INSOCOAT bearings on VFD-driven motors to prevent electrical fluting. STARNEX supplies SKF bearings, stainless shims, couplings, and motor controls in Nairobi.

Target Machinery & Typical Installations

  • •Heavy-Duty TEFC Three-Phase Induction Motors (ABB, WEG, Siemens, Brook Crompton)
  • •Centrifugal Water, Slurry & Boiler Feed Pump Sets
  • •Direct-Driven Rotary Screw Compressor Air-Ends
  • •Industrial Exhaust Blowers & Ventilation Fans

Operational Risk & Cost of Failure

Unresolved shaft misalignment induces destructive cyclic loads that fatigue motor bearings, snap drive shafts, crack end-shield castings, and destroy mechanical seals.

Adhering to correct replacement materials and diagnostic sequences prevents unscheduled line downtime and preserves factory capital equipment.

Standard Operating Procedure

Follow this verified sequential maintenance protocol step-by-step.

1

Vibration & Skin Temperature Baselining

Measure overall RMS vibration velocity (mm/s) across Drive End (DE) and Non-Drive End (NDE) bearing housings using an ISO 10816 compliant vibration meter. Note bearing skin temperature with an infrared pyrometer. Normal limit for rigid machines is < 2.8 mm/s RMS.

2

Check and Correct "Soft Foot"

Loosen one motor foot bolt at a time while measuring vertical displacement with a dial indicator. If any foot lifts by more than 0.05mm (0.002"), clean foot contact surfaces and insert precision stainless steel shims underneath.

Caution: Tightening down a motor with soft foot twists the motor casing, pinching the stator air gap and overloading bearings.
3

Laser or Dial Indicator Shaft Alignment

Mount laser transmitter/receiver units onto motor and driven pump shafts. Rotate shafts together 180 degrees. Measure vertical and horizontal angularity and offset. Adjust motor position laterally with jack bolts and vertically with shims until total offset is < 0.05mm.

4

Bearing Inspection & Replacement

If vibration spectra show high 1X/2X harmonics with bearing fault frequencies (BPFO/BPFI): decouple motor, extract rotor, and inspect bearing raceways. Always replace motor bearings with C3 radial clearance (e.g. SKF 6208-2RS1/C3 or 6310-2Z/C3).

5

VFD Driven Motors: Mitigate Inverter Fluting

If the motor is controlled by a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), common-mode voltage discharges cause microscopic electric arc fluting across bearing balls. Fit an electrically insulated bearing (SKF INSOCOAT) on the non-drive end, or install a shaft grounding ring.

6

Coupling Element Inspection & Retorquing

Inspect flexible elastomeric coupling spiders (Rotex, HRC, Lovejoy). Replace brittle, cracked, or deformed rubber buffers. Torque coupling hub locking screws to manufacturer specifications.

Common Maintenance Mistakes & Correct Engineering Practices

Pitfalls identified during field service across Kenyan industrial plants.

Mistake: Installing standard (normal clearance) bearings on high-speed electric motors

Consequence: Motor rotor thermal expansion eliminates internal radial play, causing balls to wedge into raceways, overheat (> 100°C), and seize within hours.

Correct Practice: Always specify C3 radial clearance for electric motor duty bearings.

Mistake: Using cut-up beverage can sheets as motor alignment shims

Consequence: Aluminum crushes under foot bolt torque, absorbs oil, and causes motor alignment to wander within weeks.

Correct Practice: Use only pre-cut, burr-free 304 stainless steel precision alignment shims.

Mistake: Over-greasing motor bearings until grease fills the end-shield cavity

Consequence: Causes hydrodynamic churning, severe bearing overheating, and forces grease into the motor windings, ruining stator insulation.

Correct Practice: Follow OEM regreasing calculations: Grams = D (mm) x B (mm) x 0.005. Purge old grease through the bottom drain port.

When to Stop and Investigate Further

If replacing the wear component does not restore normal operating parameters, or if the newly fitted part exhibits rapid heating, abnormal vibration, or continuous leakage within the first hour of running, do not force operation. Stop the machine, re-verify shaft alignment, check for pipe strain, confirm fluid chemical compatibility, or consult our engineering desk before restarting.

Electric Induction Motors & Variable Frequency Drives

Three-phase electric motors and variable frequency drives (VFDs) drive industrial fans, blowers, agitators, pumps, and processing machinery across Kenya. High ambient temperatures, electrical utility voltage dips, dust contamination, and harmonic vibration create constant stress on motor windings and bearing assemblies. STARNEX supplies electromechanical motor accessories including C3 electric motor bearings, contactors, motor circuit breakers, control relays, cooling fans, and terminal blocks.

Bulk Material & Packaging Conveyor Systems

Conveyors keep production moving across Kenyan cement bagging plants in Athi River, grain transfer silos in Eldoret, sugar mills in Western Kenya, bottle packaging lines in Nairobi, and mining quarries. Harsh dust, moisture, and high mechanical shock loads cause conveyor bearings to seize, drive belts to slip, and roller chains to stretch. STARNEX supplies heavy-duty conveyor mechanical components including cast iron pillow block units, precision deep groove bearings, industrial transmission belts, and drive accessories.

Centrifugal, Multistage & Chemical Transfer Pumps

Centrifugal and multistage pumps form the vascular system of Kenyan industrial plants, transferring boiler feed water, circulating cooling water through condenser towers, handling beverage ingredients, pumping washdown sanitizers, and moving wastewater effluents. Pump downtime leads to instant overheating or dry-out failures across connected machinery. STARNEX maintains inventory of critical pump consumables including mechanical shaft seals, pure graphite gland packings, C3 clearance deep groove bearings, wear rings, and suction strainers.

Frequently Asked Questions: Three-Phase Electric Motor Bearing Temperature, Vibration Analysis & Laser Alignment

Under ISO 10816-3 standards, newly commissioned rigid-mounted electric motors up to 300 kW should operate below 1.4 mm/s RMS (Zone A - Good). Vibration between 1.4 and 2.8 mm/s is acceptable for continuous operation (Zone B). Levels exceeding 4.5 mm/s require urgent mechanical maintenance.

Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) switching in VFDs generates common-mode high-frequency shaft voltages. When this voltage exceeds the insulating capability of the bearing grease film, it arcs across the balls to the outer ring. These micro-arcs melt tiny craters in the raceway, creating acoustic fluting and rapid bearing destruction.

Precision shims are manufactured from cold-rolled stainless steel with guaranteed uniform thickness and flat burr-free edges. Unlike improvised steel plates, they do not compress over time, ensuring shaft alignment remains within tolerance for years.
