Industrial V-Belt Identification & Sizing Guide
Step-by-step engineering reference for identifying industrial V-belts when markings are worn off. Compare Classical, Narrow Wedge, and Raw Edge Cogged profiles, decode Pitch Length (Lp) vs Inside Length (Li), and calculate center-to-center distances.
Direct Answer: How to Measure and Identify an Unknown V-Belt
To identify an unlabelled industrial V-belt, use vernier calipers to measure two cross-sectional dimensions: Top Width (W) and Total Height (T). A 13mm x 8mm profile is a Classical A-Section; a 13mm x 10mm profile is a Narrow Wedge SPA; a 17mm x 11mm profile is a Classical B-Section; and a 17mm x 14mm profile is a Narrow Wedge SPB. Next, wrap a flexible tape measure around the outer circumference to find Outside Length (La), then deduct profile-specific conversion constants (e.g. La minus 18mm for SPA; La minus 22mm for SPB) to determine the standard metric Pitch Length (Lp) needed for ordering.
Standard V-Belt Cross-Section Dimensions
Cross-reference your measured caliper dimensions with ISO 4184 and DIN 2215 standards.
| Profile | Category | Top Width (W) | Height (T) | Length Designation | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPZ | Narrow Wedge | 9.7 mm | 8.0 mm | Pitch Length (Lp mm) | High-speed fans, small machine tools |
| SPA | Narrow Wedge | 12.7 mm | 10.0 mm | Pitch Length (Lp mm) | Air compressors, packaging machinery, pumps |
| SPB | Narrow Wedge | 16.3 mm | 14.0 mm | Pitch Length (Lp mm) | Heavy grain crushers, tea dryers, quarry conveyors |
| SPC | Narrow Wedge | 22.0 mm | 18.0 mm | Pitch Length (Lp mm) | Heavy hammer mills, cement bagging drives (> 75 kW) |
| A Section | Classical | 13.0 mm | 8.0 mm | Inside Length (Li inches) | Agricultural equipment, light conveyors |
| B Section | Classical | 17.0 mm | 11.0 mm | Inside Length (Li inches) | Centrifugal water pumps, workshop lathes, blowers |
| C Section | Classical | 22.0 mm | 14.0 mm | Inside Length (Li inches) | Heavy industrial pumps, agitators, ball mills |
| XPA / XPB | Raw Edge Cogged | 12.7 / 16.3 mm | 10.0 / 14.0 mm | Pitch Length (Lp mm) | High-speed small-diameter pulleys, hot fan drives |
How to Measure an Unmarked V-Belt in 4 Steps
Field measurement procedure for plant maintenance technicians.
Measure Top Width (W)
Place vernier caliper jaws across the widest top edge of the belt. Compare: 10mm (SPZ/Z), 13mm (SPA/A), 17mm (SPB/B), 22mm (SPC/C).
Measure Belt Height / Thickness (T)
Measure from the top surface to the bottom inner surface. This distinguishes Classical from Wedge: an 8mm height with 13mm width is an A-section; a 10mm height with 13mm width is an SPA wedge belt.
Measure Outer Circumference (La) or Pulley Path
If the belt is intact: wrap a flexible tailor’s tape around the outer edge. If the belt is broken or missing: wrap a non-elastic string around the two pulleys through the groove bottoms, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length.
Convert to Pitch Length (Lp) for Ordering
Convert measured Outside Length (La) to standard Pitch Length (Lp) by deducting the profile offset:
• SPZ: Lp = La - 13 mm | • SPA: Lp = La - 18 mm | • SPB: Lp = La - 22 mm | • SPC: Lp = La - 30 mm

Frequently Asked Questions: Industrial V-Belts
Narrow wedge belts (SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC) have a deeper, narrower trapezoidal profile with high-modulus polyester cords placed higher in the section. They transmit up to 3 times more horsepower per unit of pulley width than classical belts (A, B, C), allowing plant designers to use smaller, lighter drive pulleys. Wedge belts must never be installed in classical pulley grooves.
Pitch Length (Lp or Ld) is the circumferential length measured at the pitch line (the neutral axis of the tension cords where no elongation or compression occurs when bending around pulleys). Inside Length (Li) is measured along the inner bottom face of the belt (commonly used for Classical belts). Outside Length (La) is measured around the top outer circumference. Conversion formulas depend on the specific section profile.
Only if you also replace the pulley. While both have an approximately 13mm top width, the SPA belt has a deeper height (10mm vs 8mm for A-section) and a 38-degree wedge angle designed for deep narrow-groove pulleys. Fitting an SPA belt into a shallow A-section groove causes the belt to ride too high and unstable.
Belts stretch permanently under operational tension. If you replace only 1 worn belt in a 4-belt drive, the single new belt is slightly shorter and tighter than the 3 old stretched belts. Consequently, the new belt carries almost 100% of the motor load, causing it to slip, overheat, and snap within days.
